You find yourself staring at the mirror in your dusty bathroom, wondering if this will be the last time you fight the demons in your head. You know your family is on the other side of the door and that they love you. But you’ve already decided tonight that they don’t. You aren’t proud of the thoughts that have revealed themselves to you. Knowing that was a lie, you promised your family that the thoughts no longer existed.
How much longer can you go on like this? How long will you feel alone in your decision to feel something again? You punch the mirror, and it forms a small scratch on your hand.
At this point, you begin to look at mental health services to see if they might help you find a healthy coping strategy or at the very least, make things more manageable. Various treatment plans are out there to give you the skills to conquer your mental health challenges.
In the past year in Ohio, 23.64% of people had a mental illness. Located in Garfield Heights, OH, Superior Behavioral Health strives to listen to your story and create a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
What Do We Treat?
A mental health disorder can take various forms. People often think of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Still, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), it can include schizophrenia, substance use disorder, personality disorders, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
When more than one of these disorders exists in a single person, it can be difficult for them to function day-to-day. This makes it important that providers create a tailored treatment plan that addresses each disorder in their client’s current circumstances and tackles the client’s goals and dreams for the future. Superior Behavioral Health treats the following mental health conditions:
- depression
- anxiety
- bipolar disorder
- PTSD
- substance use disorder (dual diagnosis)
How Do We Treat Mental Health Conditions?
The good news is that people with mental health challenges have options for recovery. These treatments can be combined to give you the best possible chance at recovery.
Some of these include but are not limited to:
- cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
- psychotherapy
- motivational interviewing
- rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT)
- trauma therapy
- anger management
- family therapy
CBT teaches you how to cope with challenging thoughts and behaviors, while DBT teaches skills regarding your emotions, relationships, and current state. REBT works on changing your thoughts from negative and irrational to positive and rational. Motivational interviewing teaches you how to create motivation and change in your life.
In anger management, you can identify your emotions and how to manage them better. Psychotherapy is talk therapy that helps you healthily process your experiences. In family therapy, communication and understanding are developed to grow healthy relationships within your family. Trauma therapy allows you to process the traumas that you have experienced in your past.
These types of therapies can take several forms, and they can be combined to suit your needs and goals for your treatment. At Superior Behavioral Health, we aim to listen to your story to meet you where you are. This allows us to design your best treatment plan using our available resources.
We provide the following therapies:
- individual therapy
- family counseling
- group therapy
- art therapy
- music therapy
- relapse prevention strategies
- 12-step programs
- medication-assisted treatment
We use these treatments in various programs, such as a partial hospitalization program (PHP), an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and traditional outpatient care. During PHP, you will spend 6-8 hours at our center for 5 days of the week. You will participate in individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. In IOP, you will attend therapy sessions while also being able to maintain your daily requirements. During traditional outpatient, you will receive individual and group therapy several times weekly. These treatments allow you to transition back to your daily lives slowly.
When the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) was passed in 2008, it forced insurance companies to provide the same benefits to mental health conditions as they would to physical health conditions. This ensures that insurance companies will cover mental health conditions like depression or anxiety, just like a physical health condition like a broken bone. At Superior Behavioral Health, we accept Medicaid, Medicare, commercial pay, and private pay.
So What Causes a Mental Health Disorder?
Several factors often influence mental health disorders, from genetics to childhood experiences. They might be caused by poverty and the inability to receive quality healthcare or education. And even more so, mental health disorders might be caused by social problems such as job loss.
Any combination of these risk factors can be present in a person’s life, but since every person is different and has a different story, the combinations that create the mental health disorder can also be different.
A person could have had negative childhood experiences, be under the poverty line, and come from an abusive household. Or they could have had a great childhood and be above the poverty line. Still, they may hesitate to seek help and have been experiencing social isolation due to an injury or physical medical diagnosis.
More than one mental disorder often presents itself in an individual. It might be a combination of depression and anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder. According to the research from NIDA above, 50% of people with a mental health disorder will also develop a substance use disorder. They also say that the same is true the other way around. At Superior Behavioral Health, we work with you to treat your past traumas no matter the cause of your mental health condition. You will be able to create a healthier life that allows you to find the inner strength that will help you take on challenges that appear in your future. Here you will be able to reclaim your life from your mental health disorder and live out the dreams and goals that you have for yourself.

FAQs About Mental Health Services
Do insurance companies cover mental health services?
Superior Behavioral Health accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial and private pay. As of 2008 and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), insurance companies must provide the same benefits for mental health services as they do for physical health care. If you’re unsure what your insurance will cover, call the number on the back of your HMO card. You can also call the facility you plan to visit and inquire whether or not they take your insurance. Remember that many facilities will work with you on payment plans or sliding fee scales if you’re not covered. Don’t hesitate to ask about alternative payment options.
